Sustainable fishing is a Stage 3 HSIE Geography incursion that investigates global citizenship and how we can protect and sustainably use aquatic environments. This incursion offers elements from our popular Stage 3 HSIE Geography full day Sustainable fishing excursion adapted for in school learning.
This hands-on and interactive incursion introduces students to ethical and sustainable fishing practices, drawing on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledges and international Indigenous perspectives to highlight deep cultural connections to waterways and long-standing ecological practices.
Students play a sustainable fishing game, explore a sustainable fishing kit for recreational fishers and practise tying knots to attach ethical fishing hooks to lines. They examine a sustainable hand line and learn how to cast a hand line accurately to minimise tangles that lead to environmental damage. The session concludes with a casting competition.
Sustainable fishing incursion is practical, fun and promotes the many health and wellbeing benefits of fishing and how it connects people to place.
'I love fishing, that was so amazing!!'
'Best fun ever. I'm going to ask if I can go fishing this weekend.'
