Program overview
Active citizens incursion is a Stage 2 HSIE Geography incursion program for students to learn about the Georges Riverkeepers and become junior Georges Riverkeepers.
In this 2 hour incursion students learn the origin and work of the Georges Riverkeeper organisation in ways they respond to a community need. The Georges Riverkeepers care and protect the Georges River. The Georges River, known as Kai'eemah in Dharawhal language and Tucoerah in Dharug, is a living river and is millions of years old. It flows from the headwaters on the Illawarra escarpment and Appin down to the river mouth at Kamay Botany Bay. Today the river is an urban river and it is sick. It needs community to volunteer to help look after it.
In this hands-on experience students will learn about the role of Georges Riverkeepers. They will engage with Aboriginal stories about the river, learn about the plants and animals of the river, conduct water testing and undertake a school litter survey. Students will be inspired to rethink litter and consider better ways to manage school waste.
Students will be introduced to the Zero litter in Georges River campaign and be encouraged to create a campaign to persuade the school community to strive for zero litter at home, in school and in every day.

Cost 2026 |
NSW Department of Education schools $12 per student Non-government schools $18 per student The total cost of the program will be based on the number of students confirmed at least 3 working days before your program. If the number of students is not confirmed by this time, the total cost will be calculated using the number of students listed on the original booking form or the actual number of students who attend, whichever is greater. An Interschool Journal request or sales order will then be prepared and sent to your school for payment. |
