Stage 1 Science and Technology | Living things and life cycles incursion

Georges River EEC

Program overview

Living things and life cycles is a Stage 1 Science and Technology incursion to observe and collect data on living things, their habitats and their life cycles!

In this hands-on incursion, students will go on a walk of discovery to explore and collect data about the variety of living things in their school grounds. They will use binoculars, magnifiers, invertebrate collection equipment, identification cards and tally systems to collect and represent their data. In the classroom, they will observe different life stages of beetles, wood cockroaches and stick insects brought to your school from our insect farm. Resin samples will be provided for students to examine rarely seen life cycles of native Australian animals. Students create flow charts and labelled diagrams to represent life cycles, then sculpt a plasticine model of an invertebrate to show key features and life stages.

Students will also learn how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples use knowledge of life cycles for sustainable practices.
