Program overview
Living things incursion is an Early stage 1 incursion that will ignite student imaginations as we turn off the lights and step into twilight. A reading of The Hunt by Narelle Oliver will deliver the hook for learning more about living things, nocturnal animals, their features and the secret skills animals have to survive in their environments.
Students step outside the classroom and use magnifiers for making observations on the many living things that live in your school. We use identification charts to identify animals and record the places where they live and how they survive in their environment. Students then create a habitat garden using natural materials provided by our staff to consolidate learning on how small animals survive in their environment. When a predator is produced students reenact the Hunt using shadow puppets and torches. Tier 2 and 3 vocabulary is modelled and students play with synonyms and rhyme. The session concludes with body percussion and a fast-paced food web game.
