Stage 2 Science and Technology | Forces shape Earth's surface incursion

Georges River EEC

Program overview

Forces shape Earth's surface incursion is a Stage 2 Science and Technology program where students step into the science of our shifting planet!

In this hands-on incursion, students explore weathering and erosion in fun and practical ways. We begin with Aboriginal Dreaming stories that share cultural perspectives on how landforms were created highlighting deep connections to Country. We investigate how wind, water and living things slowly shape Earth’s surface over time through hands-on investigations with our large collection of soils, sediments and rocks. We then venture outside for an exploration of the playground to build miniature river systems and make soil balls to connect concepts with real world examples. The session concludes with students making a colours of Australia clay artwork.

Together we discuss the global significance of ochre and the significance of different coloured ochres for local Aboriginal Peoples.

This fast-paced workshop develops curiosity through observation, prediction, teamwork, tactile play and art.

Essential information

Student activities

Student activities are differentiated, inclusive and may vary depending on the conditions.

Dreaming stories

Aboriginal Dreaming stories create the hook for this fast paced session on Australia's unique geology.

Weathering and erosion

Students conduct practical investigations on physical and chemical weathering and create miniature landscapes to see erosion in action.

Grinding stones

Rocks are tools. Students use grinding stones to investigate Aboriginal use of sedimentary and igneous rocks.

Exploring playground geology

Where is it? We go on a geological adventure of the school playground. Students observe weathering and erosion in action and engage in soil science. Hands will get dirty!

Colours of Australia artwork

To conclude the session students use clays to examine minerals and iron and manganese oxides to create an class artwork.
